The Boardman Spartan Marching Band

Over the years, Boardman High School's marching band has become not only a symbol for the school, but a symbol within the state. It is a nationally recognized band, frequently taking trips to events such as the Rose Bowl, professional football games, and the Indy 500. Every year the band is invited on several highly-recognized trips, usually accepting 1–2 invites. In November 2009, during a trip to New York City for the Veteran's Day Parade, the jazz ensemble performed at Trump Tower. The small ensemble received such favorable reviews that they were invited back. Band director Thomas Ruggieri also makes the band stand out by selecting popular music, in the 2010 football season playing hits such as Bad Romance, Tik Tok, My First Kiss, and California Gurls, among many others. During the winter, the band splits into three separate bands: Wind ensemble (the top rated group), Symphonic band (an extremely talented group of musicians, not yet at the level of Wind Ensemble),Concert band (those average players in the band) and Freshman band (consisting of a majority of all incoming freshman, with the exception of those in jazz or orchestra.) The Boardman Hgh School Wind Ensemble has also become a highly acclaimed group, frequently invited to play for the Ohio Board of Education.

Music

In 2006, the music department was selected a "Grammy Signature School" and received a $1,000 award. The music department was one of 16 schools selected for this honor.[2] The department consists of award-winning choral, band, and orchestra departments. The choral department is currently under the direction of Linda Smrek. The band is under the direction of Thomas Ruggieri. The orchestra is under the direction of Michele Prokop.

Clubs

The school's Latin Club functions as a local chapter of both the Ohio Junior Classical League (OJCL)[3] and National Junior Classical League (NJCL).[4]
